ENRICHING YOUNG MINDS THROUGH DIGITAL LEARNING
Gone are those days that children must sit down and listen to a teacher the whole day without learning anything from a technology device in the classroom. Our country needs to accelerate pace when it comes to digital learning and the future of our children depends on it. Digital learning is any instructional practice that effectively uses technology to strengthen a student’s learning experience. It emphasizes high-quality instruction and provides access to challenging content, feedback through formative assessment, opportunities for learning anytime and anywhere, and individualized instruction to ensure all students reach their full potential to succeed in college and a career.
Digital learning develops positive feelings of accomplishment from mastering new knowledge and skills using digitized learning tools giving children the confidence they need to want to learn even more new things. This increases their efficiency and productivity. Children who explore open-ended questions with imagination and logic learn how to make decisions, as opposed to just temporarily memorizing the textbook.
Creating a digital classroom will not only stimulate our children but, will allow them to learn where they learn best. It will equip them with the mindset and basic functional skills to prepare for the future. Right now, the future looks bright for them and this will help them think innovatively and progress at their own rate. The benefit of having Digital Learning is that, teachers will share what works, our children will be aware of the type of jobs in the future of our economy, they will be able to work in a technology-rich environment and apart from all they will be able to develop an action plan to continue learning.
Through digital learning we will equip our children with the mindset and basic functions skills to prepare for the future economy. It will help them to understand emerging technologies and how they impact work, interpret and use data, and adopt a positive mindset for change, innovation and resilience.
Important of digital learning for rural areas
It will enable children to access a wide range of educational apps and to-up-to-date technological equipment providing them with access to educational information from around the world. It will also provide digital technology and the skill to use it.
Partnerships between private enterprises and government
The Via Afrika Digital Education Centre and Breadline Africa are doing a great job at some of rural communities in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Free State by providing them with digital learning centers. A lot still needs to be done in rural communities.
Implementing this at all our schools is going to be a challenge, especially for schools in deep rural areas where access to connectivity is limited. More initiatives such as Via Afrika and Breadline Africa are needed.
Digital learning will brighten our children’s future and our schools will be a better place for our young minds.
